Airmed is an Irish company founded by a leading anaesthesiologist specialising in paediatric and adult airway management.

This airway management device provides the benefits of an endo-tracheal tube without the complexity. Deployed without the need of a laryngoscope, it can be used on conscious patients and is ideal for use by first responders in the field.

The Product

Keeping a patient’s airways open is a matter of life and death in a multitude of clinical and emergency care situations. The standard solution is to use a laryngoscope to insert an endo-tracheal (ET) tube deep into the back of the throat and to inflate a tracheal cuff on the end of the tube to maintain lung pressure and prevent the loss of anaesthetic gasses.

The tube in our design is much shorter than its predecessor. With this new design, a unique inter-oral seal is formed between the inside of the patient’s lips and gums.

Designed to work with a full suite of generic accessories and straps, it is produced in two variations each with a unique tongue management geometry. The shorter of these versions can be used on conscious patients combining the ease of an external mask with the functionality of an ET tube.

The Process

Patent Whitespace Analysis confirmed that the approach being considered was unique. Inventive Problem-solving (TRIZ) systematically delivered practical solutions to challenges around material selection and sealing dynamics.

Ethnography studies, including informal and formal physician interviews helped refine the product definition. Ergonomics, Human Factor Studies and Test Jigs informed the geometry of the device, the shape and softness of the seal and the ease of deployment, especially under stressful conditions.

The innovative product was fully documented and was accompanied with a well-defined business case capturing set-up costs, unit pricing and project return on investment scenarios.
